EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY)

Planning and preparation for your eyelid plastic surgery.

Your initial consultation for your cosmetic eyelid surgery.

During the initial consultation for your eyelid plastic surgery, your surgeon will examine your face thoroughly, including the skin and the underlying bone and tissue. Together, you will agree on realistic goals and expectations.

Your vision and tear production may be tested. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them. You will need to agree with your surgeon whether your eyelid plastic surgery will involve all four eyelids or just upper or lower, whether skin as well as fat is to be removed, and whether any other procedures are desired.

Your surgeon will explain fully the eyelid surgery techniques and the anaesthesia he will use, where the surgery will be performed, and the facial surgery risks and costs involved. (Note: Most insurance policies don't cover eyelid plastic surgery, unless you can prove that drooping upper lids interfere with your vision. Check with your insurer.) Be sure to ask any questions you may have about discomfort following your eyelid surgery or healing time.

Communicating your medical history - an important step in your eyelid plastic surgery.

Your surgeon will ask you about any medical conditions that could cause problems during or after your eyelid surgery, such as high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, or any tendency to form excessive scars. Be frank, particularly about smoking and any drugs or medications you are taking - aspirin for example can affect clotting. Any relevant medical history from your ophthalmologist and the record of your most recent eye test will also be reviewed.

Preparing for your eyelid plastic surgery.

It's important you follow your surgeon's instructions on how to prepare for your eyelid surgery. They may cover eating, drinking, smoking, and taking or avoiding certain vitamins and medications. If you are a smoker, it's especially important that you stop at least two weeks before and after your eyelid surgery; smoking inhibits blood flow to the skin, and can interfere with the healing of your face lift.

Even if you are only an outpatient, arrange for someone to drive you home after your eyelid plastic surgery, and to help you out for a day or two afterwards.

Your eyelid surgery will be performed in a state of the art surgery theatre.

Our surgeons perform eyelid plastic surgeries in the operating theatre at the renowned Hurlingham Clinic and Spa, or in one of the London private hospitals where they serve as a Consultant. Almost all patients are able to go home on the day of the surgery; some remain in the hospital for one day.
