Fraxel Laser Glossary

Fraxel Laser: is a new type of laser which has been recently approved by the FDA for skin laser treatment. Fraxel laser is an effective form of treatment for:

  • Acne Scars
  • Melasma
  • Facial wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Skin rejuvenation (especially the hands, neck and chest)

Acne Scars: these occur when the visible remnants of acne are permanently left over after the acne itself has subsided. Acne scarring can be extensive and hence have a considerable affect on a person's appearance and self esteem. Fraxel laser has been shown to be one of the most effective forms of acne scar treatment.

Melasma: is a form of skin discolouration which results in patches of brown skin on the face and/or forearms. Although melasma can affect men it is far more common in females as it results from a fluctuation in female sex hormones. The most common causes of melasma are pregnancy, oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Fraxel laser has been shown to be one of the most effective forms of melasma treatment.

Chloasma: is another name form melasma.

Mask of pregnancy: melasma occurring in pregnancy is often referred to as 'mask of pregnancy'.

Anti Wrinkle Skin Treatment: any treatment which aims to reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles is referred to as anti wrinkle treatment.

The Hurlingham Clinic offers a number of different anti wrinkle treatments including fraxel laser treatment, wrinkle relaxing injections and blue peel.

Fraxel Laser Wrinkle Treatment: fraxel laser can be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Fraxel laser treatment works by triggering the body's own natural production of new collagen and skin cells. As the new collagen pumped cells replace the old dead tissue, the skin becomes firmer and less lined.

Age Spots: these are blemishes which appear on the skin as a result of ageing and exposure to ultra violet radiation from the sun. Fraxel laser has been FDA approved as an effective form of treatment for age spots.

Skin rejuvenation: any cosmetic or surgical procedure used to increase or restore the appearance of younger looking skin is known as skin rejuvenation. Fraxel laser skin rejuvenation treatment is effective on many areas of the skin including that of the face, hands, neck, and chest.

Blue peel: is a type of chemical peel which can be applied to both the face and non-facial areas. The application of blue peel results in layers of dead skin cells peeling off which allows fresh skin cells to appear, giving the skin a tighter and more clearer appearance.

Blue peel is also sometimes known as obagi blue peel and can also be used to treat acne, pigmentation, scars and sun damaged skin.

The Hurlingham Clinic specialises in blue peel treatment.

Blue Peel Facelift: due to its anti wrinkle affects, blue peel treatment is often referred to as blue peel facelift.

Dermal Filler: is a substance which is injected into the skin to give it a plumper, smoother and firmer appearance. There are many different types of dermal fillers available in the market today. The procedure usually last around 30 minutes and involves the dermal filler being inserted into the skin (or lips). The results of dermal filler treatment usually last between 6 to 9 months but this varies from person to person.
