Smartlipo Glossary

Smartlipo: also known as laser liposuction or laser lipolysis is a medical treatment used to treat localised fat cell deposits. Smartlipo has recently become FDA approved in both Europe and USA and its popularity is continuing to grow.

In comparison to Liposuction which usually requires general anaesthesia, smartlipo can be performed under local anaesthesia. Smartlipo treatment involves the insertion of a small cannula which contains a laser fibre into the skin. The cannula is continuously moved back and forth which allows the laser to destroy the localised fats cells. Due to the small size of the cannula, the recovery time post smartlipo fat reduction treatment is significantly less than that of liposuction. This is one of the main reasons for the rapid increase in popularity of Smartlipo treatment.

Smart lipo: is another way that Smartlipo is commonly pronounced

Smartlipo Liposuction: due to the similar objectives of both types of treatment, smartlipo is often referred to as smartlipo liposuction or sometimes as smartlipo surgery.

Smartlipo Clinic: a clinic which specialises in Smartlipo treatment is known as a smart lipo clinic.

Liposuction: this is a cosmetic surgery procedure performed to remove fat from the body. Liposuction can be performed on many areas on the body including the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, arms and neck. A key difference between smartlipo and liposuction is that smart lipo works well on small areas (e.g. double chins) whilst liposuction can be used to treat much larger areas.

Tummy Tuck: this is a cosmetic surgery procedure which is performed to give the abdomen a more firm appearance. It is often done in conjunction with liposuction.
