Breast Lift FAQ's (Breast Uplift)
Is breast lift surgery for me?
The objective of breast lift surgery is to give the breasts a firmer, shapelier and more youthful appearance. A breast lift could be the right choice for you if you are experiencing any of the following conditions:
- Are generally satisfied with the size of your breasts but are unhappy with their shape.
- Are unhappy with both the volume and shape of your breasts. In this case a combination of a breast implant and breast lift may be the right choice for you.
- Have uneven (asymmetrical)breasts.
- Have lost the youthful shape and firmness of your breasts through ageing (gravity), pregnancy, weight loss or weight gain.
- Feel your self esteem and confidence is being affected by the shape of your breasts.
What does breast lift surgery involve?
Breast lift surgery involves rearranging the breast tissue and tightening the skin surrounding the breasts. The nipple and areola are also moved to a higher position to give the breasts a more youthful and firmer appearance. There are various types of surgical incisions which can be used to carry out a breast lift which depend on the size and shape of the breasts. Your experienced cosmetic surgeon will discuss all the possible options with you in depth during the consultation and will advise you on the best procedure for you.
Where is the surgery performed and how long does it take?
Our cosmetic surgeons perform breast lift surgery in one of the London private hospitals where they serve as a Consultant. The surgery is performed under intravenous sedation or general anaesthesia and usually takes between one and a half to three hours for both breasts but may take longer.
Is breast lift surgery painful and what are the possible complications?
Naturally, there will be some bruising and swelling post surgery and your breasts will feel uncomfortable for a day or two. However, the pain should not be severe and you will be provided with pain relief medication if you require it.
Serious complications from breast lift surgery are infrequent and every year many women undergo the operation and are delighted with the results achieved. However like any surgery there are possible complications which your experienced cosmetic surgeon will discuss with you in depth during your consultation.
How soon after having breast lift surgery will I be able to resume my normal activities?
Our staff will provide you with detailed instructions on resuming your normal activities. Although the recovery time for breast lift surgery varies from patient to patient depending on their general health
and extent of surgery most patients are able to go home on the day of surgery and are up and about in a day or two. We advise taking at least a week off work and avoid lifting anything above your head for three to four weeks. Other precautions include not having sex for at least a week after surgery and avoiding strenuous sports for about one month.
I am concerned about both the size of my breasts and their shape?
Many women have this concern and choose to have breast enlargement or breast reduction surgery alongside having a breast lift. Be frank and discuss your concerns openly with your surgeon who will help you meet your goals.
Will I be able to breast feed after having a breast lift?
Having a breast lift should not affect your ability to breast feed as your milk ducts and nipples will be left intact. Many women actually have a breast lift because pregnancy and nursing have left them with stretched skin and less breast volume. If you’re planning to have more children, however, it may be a good idea to postpone your breast lift because pregnancy is likely to stretch your breasts and reduce their size once more.
When can I expect to see the results of my breast lift?
Be patient with your breasts as you will need to allow them some time to form their new natural shape. It will also take time (usually a few months) for the scars to become less obvious which should eventually fade to thin white lines. Fortunately, they can usually be placed so that you can wear even low-cut tops and bikinis. Although the results achieved through a breast lift are not permanent, your new breast shape should remain constant for many years unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant..
