Breast Reduction FAQ’s (Reduction Mammoplasty)
Is breast reduction surgery for me?
There are many different reasons why a woman may choose to have breast reduction surgery. Some of the common ones include:
- Having unusually large breasts can make a woman feel extremely self-conscious. Breast reduction surgery can help create smaller, shapelier breasts that are in better proportion to the rest of the body.
- To increase comfort levels. Back, neck and shoulder pain can be a result of large breasts.
- To create better symmetry between both breasts and reduce the size of the areola (the darker skin surrounding the nipple).
- To prevent skin irritation.
- To prevent shoulder indentations caused by bra straps.
- To increase mobility which can be restricted by unusually large breasts.
- To improve appearance and self-confidence.
What is involved in breast reduction surgery?
Breast reduction surgery involves removing glandular tissue, fat and excess skin to create a new breast size and shape. The position of the nipple and areola are also readjusted to ensure the breasts have a natural look. Your breast surgeon will discuss the various surgical options with you in depth and will provide you with detailed information on the best procedure for you. This will depend on factors such as your age, the size and shape of your breasts and the condition of your skin.
Where is the surgery performed and how long does it take?
Our cosmetic surgeons perform breast reduction surgery in one of the London private hospitals where they serve as a Consultant. The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes two to three hours but may take longer.
Is breast reduction surgery painful and what are the possible complications?
For the first couple of days post surgery you are likely to feel some pain and discomfort. However your cosmetic surgeon will provide you with the appropriate pain relief medication.
Serious complications from breast reduction surgery are infrequent and every year many women undergo the operation and are delighted with the results. However like any surgery there are possible complications which your surgeon will discuss with you in depth during your consultation.
What does the recovery process involve?
The recovery time post breast reduction surgery varies from patient to patient. It depends on factors such as your general physical condition and the extent of your breast reduction. Most patients are able to go home on the day of surgery; although some remain in hospital for one or two day.
After surgery you will wake up wearing a surgical bra over gauze dressing. The bandages can be removed a day or two after surgery but you are likely to continue wearing a surgical bra for several weeks post surgery whilst the bruising and swelling subside.
In general you should be up and about in a day or two after surgery but should avoid any strenuous activity such as lifting or pushing anything heavy for approximately three to four weeks. Our staff will provide you with detailed instructions about resuming you normal activities on consultation.
How soon after having breast reduction surgery will I be able to return to work?
After about two weeks most patients can return to work provided that it is not too strenuous.
What results can I expect?
The swelling caused by the surgery should disappear in the first few weeks. After this your breasts will gradually start to settle in their new shape which can take between six months to a year.
Breast reduction can have a profound effect on your confidence and body image. Your body will look better proportioned and your clothes will fit you better. Without the excessive weight of large breasts, you are likely to also find greater enjoyment in playing sports and engaging in physical activities. Overall, the chances are that, like most women, you will be extremely pleased with the results.
