What does breast enlargement involve?

Breast Enlargement (otherwise known as breast augmentation, breast implants or breast enhancement) is the process of cosmetically enhancing the breast size by inserting implants through surgery. There are a variety of implant types which vary in size, shape and texture. Our specialist surgeons will help you decide on the right type and size for you to ensure that it is in line with your anatomy and the look that you want to achieve.  Through utilising the latest breast implant procedures our goal is to always ensure that the end result is completely natural looking breasts which compliment your figure.

What does the surgery involve and where will it be done?

Your breast surgeon will discuss the various surgical options with you in depth and will provide you with detailed information on the entire procedure including post surgical care. This will involve determining the best procedure for you based on your general health, skin texture and breast anatomy.  Every effort will be made to ensure that the resulting surgical scar is as inconspicuous as possible.
The surgery is done under general anaesthetic and usually takes between 1-2 hours.  It is performed at one of the private hospitals based in London where our experienced cosmetic surgeons also serve as Consultants.

Is breast enlargement surgery painful and what are the possible complications?

Complications of breast surgery are rare if proper guidelines are followed and the surgery is done by an experienced breast surgeon but they will be discussed with you in detail on consultation. Post surgery you will feel some soreness and tiredness but should be up and about in 24-48 hours. We will provide you with painkillers if necessary but you should experience tenderness rather than actual pain.  After three to four weeks your breasts should no longer be sore.

How soon after my breast enlargement surgery will I be able to return to work?

Most patients are discharged from hospital after overnight stay or on the same day if the appropriate discharge criteria are met.  Patients usually return to work 10-14 days post surgery.

How long do breast implants last?

On average, breast implants last for at least 10 years. As time goes by, some of the effects of breast augmentation will be lost and surgery may have to be repeated to replace the implants.

Will I be able to breast feed after having breast implants?

Breast implants should not interfere with breastfeeding. There is no evidence to suggest silicone can be transferred to breast milk. However, if you intend to breast feed, please inform your surgeon as this may affect the type of operation you have.

Will I receive any follow up care after having breast surgery?

At Hurlingham Clinic, we place a great deal of importance on ensuring that all our patients receive exceptional levels of post operative support and aftercare. You will be invited to have regular follow ups with your surgeon and mammograms if you are in the appropriate age group ensuring that if any complications occur, they can be detected and treated as early as possible.
