Surgical Procedures - Plastic Surgery For Men

FACIAL SURGERY

Hurlingham Clinic Ear Surgery

Enhancing a man's appearance for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons by using surgery.

A high value is placed on looking young and fit in our society. Men refer to their 'roles', not just their jobs, so it is not just film actors who invest in plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons. Increasingly, men of all ages and from all walks of life want a more balanced nose, a rejuvenated face, a trimmer waistline - and surgery can achieve outcomes that exercise, diet and self-discipline cannot, though it is not a substitute for them. The procedures chosen must take into account many factors such as skin thickness, beard growth, or body type. What can and should be done in your case will depend on a Consultation with your surgeon. However the following introductory paragraphs will, we hope, be helpful.

Planning

You have to be able to imagine the improvement - and to be realistic at the same time. A lot may be achieved but perfection is impossible. Initially full and frank communication between you and your plastic surgeon is essential. You will have to overcome any reserve or awkwardness you may feel and be clear about what you want the procedure to achieve and how you hope to look and feel afterwards. Remember that your age and health may play a role in the quality of the outcome. Your surgeon will evaluate you, conduct a physical examination, take pre-operative photographs, and explain which surgical techniques he recommends for you and why. You will discuss type of anaesthesia, where the surgery will be performed, possible risks, costs and the schedule. Medical insurance does not normally cover cosmetic procedures but some plastic surgeons offer financing plans or accept credit cards.

The Surgery

Your surgeon will provide extensive information about the particular procedure you plan to have during your consultation. Do make sure you fully understand the issues that influence your surgery.

If you are planning facial or neck surgery, your doctor will examine your entire head-face-neck region. Is the hairline receding? How full are the sideburns? Does the beard-growing skin extend up the cheeks or down the neck? Are there facial scars? Is the skin sun-damaged? Is the neck skin loose or drooping? Male facial skin has a richer blood supply than female facial skin. This means that male faces bleed more during surgery and there is a greater risk of blood pooling under the skin (hematoma) after surgery. Also, any scarring that may result from surgery may be more difficult for men to hide, since they do not wear make-up or style their hair around their faces as many women do. Hair growth and beard growth may also have a major influence on the success of a face lift. If you are balding or your hair is thinning, considerable surgical skill may be required to hide the face lift incision, especially in the temple area. If the hair-bearing skin of your upper neck is pulled behind your ears during surgery, you may find that you have to shave behind your ears or the back of your neck. Hopefully, however, electrolysis can correct this problem. Discuss all the possibilities fully with your surgeon.

A 'jowly' area beneath the chin also concerns many men. In younger patients, liposuction alone may be sufficient to remove this fat. Older patients may require a full face lift and neck lift, which may include removing excess skin and tightening the platysma muscles, which run down each side of the neck. Although these muscles are usually thicker in men than in women the operation is no more difficult.

  • FACIAL REFINISHING

Hurlingham Clinic Ear SurgeryAfter skin-smoothing treatments to the face such as chemical peel or laser treatment, you may not be able to shave for about three weeks. Because these procedures strip away the surface layers of skin, your face will remain sensitive, swollen, and bright pink for several weeks after surgery. Some men are happy that the beard growth helps conceal the pinkness of their recovering skin, especially if they feel uncomfortable about using camouflage make-up. Men who feel self-conscious about their condition are also advised to give up alcohol for about a month since it causes the areas of treated facial skin to become noticeably red and flushed.

  • CHANGING FACIAL FEATURES

Cosmetic procedures such as eyelid, nose and facial implants are performed in essentially the same way on men and women. It is important that you make clear to your surgeon what he is to try and achieve. Are you seeking a more masculine look? A chin with better projection? More prominent cheekbones? A stronger nose?
